On the evening of August 8, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, Douglas Roland Elmore, 60, of Nampa, Idaho, completed his earthly journey and entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Supported by his devoted family and numerous cherished friends, Doug fought a long and valiant battle with cancer until Jesus called him home. Doug died the way he lived–full of humor, optimism, courage, and a deep love for his Lord, family, and friends. Quite simply, to know Doug was to love him!

Doug was born January 20, 1956, the son of Emerson J. and Evelyn L. Elmore of Seattle, Washington. The family moved to Nampa, Idaho in 1958 where Doug remained for the rest of his life.  He was an Idaho boy to the core and was taught a love for the great outdoors, fishing, and hunting by his hero, his Grandpa Archie Rutledge.  Doug loved his upbringing with his three brothers, Larry, Ron, and Bob, in a small town where there was a new adventure around every corner. He was a born “class clown,” always entertaining others with his antics.  As a boy he loved playing football and basketball. He was recently reminiscing that he grew up going to church twice on Sunday and every Wednesday night, and remembered spending most of his childhood on his knees at the altar feeling guilty over one thing or another. Of course, those of us that knew him back then were quick to remind him that he was most likely at the altar because he was one of those mischievous Elmore boys, and he probably needed forgiveness for at least one of his latest escapades!

Doug graduated in 1974 from Nampa Christian High School, and he later met the love of his life, Lindee Moore, while working at Sunset Sports, where they were both employed.  Doug proposed on Thanksgiving Day by putting a message on the Sunset Sports marquee that read “Lindee, will you marry me?” They became man and wife on August 4, 1984, celebrating their 32nd wedding anniversary just last week. In 1995, Doug and Lindee welcomed their son Kolton Douglas into their family, followed by their daughter, Kylee Kristina in 1998.

Doug was an avid bicyclist and toured on many trips with his brother and friends. He also loved running and completed several half marathons. He was also passionate about serving with the Ski Mountain Host Program at Bogus Basin with many of his closest friends. Over the years he also poured his life into the Boy Scouts program that he shared with his son Kolton, and he beamed with pride as Kolton was awarded his Eagle Scout status. He also loved coaching his kids in sports, loving to watch Kylee play softball. It was a highlight for Doug in his last days to be able to attend Kylee’s Senior Night, where she pitched the last game of her high school career, and then see her graduate later in May. Doug also taught Sunday School and was a staple at Crossroads Community Church’s “Man Camp” each year. He cherished his deep friendships with the men in his prayer group at Crossroads.

If you were a friend of Doug’s, you were a friend for life. His bigger-than-life personality brought joy, laughter, and perhaps a bit of well-intentioned torment, to everyone he loved.  Anyone that knew Doug for very long could probably tell you at least three stories of pranks he pulled on them, and if you were ever the recipient of one of his bear hugs, you knew you’d been hugged! Doug was loyal to a fault, always believing the best of everyone and always willing to lend a hand or help someone in need. As a career contractor, he was known for his detailed carpentry work and construction expertise, and he was always willing to teach others the trade. Doug remembered with fondness the years he spent working at Lloyd Lumber and Beniton Construction and the many clients and friendships that were made over his years in private business as Doug’s Finish Works.

However, the greatest joy and accomplishment of Doug’s life was his beautiful family.  Doug’s spirit now lives on in his children, Kolton and Kylee.  He would be the first to tell you how proud he was of them! The love and encouragement of his wife, Lindee, was the stabilizing force in his lengthy battle with cancer, and he was quick to sing her praises anytime you’d ask him how he was doing.  In fact, he couldn’t even talk about Lindee’s strength and comfort through this past year without tears welling in his eyes. Doug loved Lindee, Kolton, and Kylee with everything he was and would often share that he was the most blessed of men for the family that God gave him.

Doug is survived by his wife, Lindee, his children, Kolton and Kylee, his loving mother, Evelyn Elmore, his three brothers, Larry (Claudia), Ron (Terry Dee) and Bob (Debbie) Elmore and their families, his sister-in-law, Deb Kelly, his mother-in-law, Merla Childs, his sister-in-law, Laurie Moore and family, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Emerson Elmore, and his maternal and paternal grandparents, Archie and Margaret Rutledge and Frank and Jessie Elmore.

Lindee, Kolton, and Kylee would like to extend a special appreciation to the many people that have walked this journey with them, supporting them through it all. Doug had so many close, loving friends and family that surrounded them with help, including organizing a fundraiser, replacing the roof on their home, repairing and trimming up the landscaping, and bringing meals.  They would also like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Rice and the staff at the Idaho Urologic Institute, Dr. John Swerdloff and staff at MSTI in Nampa, and the entire oncology unit at St. Luke’s Hospital in downtown Boise.

When Doug was diagnosed with cancer, he would continuously remind us that he was in God’s hands, whatever God decided to do with him.  He knew that “to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord.” Today we rest, knowing that Doug is completely healed in the presence of his Lord, most likely stirring up a little fun mischief in the new neighborhood!  Now that “Elmo” has arrived, heaven will never be the same again!

A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at Crossroads Community Church, 4170 E Amity Avenue, Nampa, Idaho on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 11am.
