After graduating from Caldwell High School, Class of ‘51, he received a full ride scholarship to the University of Utah to play basketball.  He was in his sophomore year when he was drafted by the US Army and went on to serve his country. He was stationed in Alaska until the war ended.

Upon returning to the University of Utah to finish his degree, he met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dottie) Dillard. September 8, 1957 they eloped to Elko, Nevada.

During their marriage, they were blessed with three sons, Stan, Cal and Sam. His Career moved the family around the Pacific Northwest and Colorado .Hugh enjoyed his career as a retail manager for the Idaho Department Stores, The Merc and PN Hursh for over 24 years.
