Lloyd E. Markus, 87 of Nampa, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2017 at the home of his daughter. He was born on August 4, 1930 in Lakeview, South Dakota, the fourth of eight children born to Kathryn and William Markus.

The family moved west finding work with government defense projects, sometimes living in makeshift housing until more permanent accommodations were available.  They finally settled in Nampa, Idaho in 1941.

Lloyd was a graduate of Nampa High School in 1950 where he participated in boxing and lettered four years in track.  He then attended one year of business school before being drafted into the US Army in March of 1951. He married Sara Corder June 23, 1951 and they began their marriage years at Fort Lewis in Washington state.  There, daughter Diane was born.  Upon his discharge from the Army, the family returned to Nampa in 1953.  His son Wayne was born in 1955, followed by son Russell in 1959.

Lloyd enjoyed a 39-year career in the meat packing industry.  He started as a butcher and ended his career as plant engineer.  He was well respected for incorporating many innovative ideas, including development of an automated knife sharpening machine. Following retirement Lloyd volunteered for several years with Idaho Fish and Game, where he was fondly known as “Bear Trap Lloyd”.

Lloyd was an avid elk hunter.  He also was a horseman.  He especially enjoyed utilizing his horses to pack the camp in and the elk out. The family also enjoyed vacations to the Oregon coast, Disneyland, and many camping, fishing and hunting adventures. Later in life He and Sara purchased a cabin near Garden Valley in 1985, where they spent many wonderful hours with family and friends.

Lloyd was a unique self-taught wood carver and won many awards from the Idaho Woodcarving Guild.  His carvings remain prized possessions of family and friends. He also enjoyed competing in fun runs/race walking.  His favorite was the Robie Creek half marathon.  At the age of 70, he finished in the top of his age group.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Sara, his youngest son Russell, his parents, in-laws, brother Kenneth, his wife Charlotte, and sister Linda.

Lloyd is survived by daughter Diane, son Wayne (Vicki), grandchildren Mindy Franssen, Amy Nixon (Craig), Joe Franssen (Helenna), Holly Markus-Martinez, Abigail Nieto (Sam), and Katie Hadlock plus thirteen great grandchildren and many, many special friends.

Special thanks to the Nampa Senior Center where Lloyd frequently enjoyed lunch and conversation. Also, special thanks to nurse Emily of Encompass Hospice and John Yraguen of Nampa Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers or plants the family suggests remembrances to Salvation Army, A.L.P.H.A. (Allies Linked for the Prevention of HIV and AIDS) 575 N. 8th St, Boise, ID 83702, or a favorite charity of your choice.
