Paul William Sutherland started and finished his life in Nampa ID. He was born on September 25, 1931 and died on February 27, 2017

His zest for life, whether in humanitarian service or recreation adventures took him all over the world. After earning his medical degree from the Marquette University School of Medicine, Paul enlisted in the Navy and served for two years as a Navy physician in Port Lyautey Morocco. After returning from duty, Paul and the family served as medical missionaries in Swaziland and South Africa. His joy in working with the Swazi people was evident in the numerous stories he told about life in the southern part of Africa. After 11 years the family returned to the states where Paul completed a medical fellowship in gastroenterology. However, his heart for missions never wavered and he went on many short-term mission trips to Mexico, Honduras, and earthquake relief in Guatemala.  More recently he volunteered at Hands of Hope in Nampa, testing medical equipment for safety and functionality.

Paul’s life was enriched by his love of adventure, many times involving heightened physical activity. He was a life-long runner, completing the 56-mile Comrades marathon three times, qualifying for the Boston marathon, and running in numerous 26-mile marathons. His passion for adventure led him to alpine mountain climbing on Mt. Shasta, Mt. Rainier, Pequeno Alpamayo in Bolivia, Aconcaqua in Argentina, and Popocatepetl in Mexico. Other activities included deep sea fishing for Albacore tuna, kayaking, RV-ing, hiking, Nordic skiing, biking, horseback riding,  and trout fishing. He landed his largest trout, 16 inches, this past October. Paul lived up to his own philosophy, “Life is precious and live it to the fullest”.

Paul is survived by his wife, Leonie Sutherland, his three children Randall Sutherland, Karen Channell and Tim Sutherland, stepdaughter Denise Brail, grandchildren Amara Doig, Cameron Sutherland, Odette Channell, Connor Sutherland, and Kira Sutherland, siblings Robert Sutherland, Margaret Carlson, Frank Sutherland, and Ellen Reisch.

A memorial service will be held in Nampa at the College Church of the Nazarene, 504 E. Dewey Ave. on Saturday March 18th, at 11:00 AM with military honors by personnel from the US Navy. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hands of Hope, 1201 S. Powerline Rd., Nampa, Idaho 83686.
