Rowena M. Britt, 80, of Nampa, passed away on December 5, 2017, in the loving care of family.  A Celebration of Rowena’s Life will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Nampa Church of the Brethren, 11030 West Orchard Avenue, Nampa, ID 83651.

Born November 8, 1937 on a farm in Van Alstyne, Texas, Rowena actively contributed to the family farm, tending to the cotton fields and making hominy.  An excellent student, Rowena graduated high school Valedictorian.

In 1961, she married Kenneth B. Britt of Spokane, Washington, in the oldest Christian Church in Texas, the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Van Alstyne.

Rowena received a BA in Home Economics from Austin College in Sherman, TX in 1959.  In 1961, she earned a Masters in Clothing & Textiles at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX.  Rowena continued her education with a concentration in elementary education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR; College of Idaho and Northwest Nazarene University.  She held teaching certificates in four states: Texas, Iowa, Oregon and Idaho.  She taught Home Economics in Seagoville and Tom Bean, Texas; 5th Grade in Carrollton, TX; 6th & 7th Grade Science in Weatherford, TX; 5th Grade at Talent Elementary in Oregon; 2nd & 4th Grade at Sunnyridge Elementary in Nampa, ID, and Adventures in Attitudes.  She specialized in the Slingerland Approach to Language Arts and Structure of the Intellect with a particular devotion to students with dyslexia.

Rowena sang in countless Christian Church choirs.  Active in the Nampa Church of the Brethren, she served on the Teaching, Pastoral Search and Ministry Formation Committees.

Rowena enjoyed knitting and crocheting and generously shared her blankets, scarves, scrubbies and other handcrafts with friends, family and strangers.  She travelled frequently with her daughter’s family and delighted in the stories and lives of travelers she met along the way.

Rowena was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth B. Britt and her parents, Eula Grissom Taylor and Herbert L. Taylor.  She is survived by her daughter, Kara Britt, her granddaughter, Kaia Maestretti and son-in-law Randy Maestretti of Danville, California; and a brother Lyndon Taylor of Dallas, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Rowena & Kenneth Britt Scholarship at Northwest Christian University, Attn: Rachael Morse, 828 E 11th Ave, Eugene, OR 97401, or at https://donate.nwcu.edu/.
