My long journey began June 14, 1924, in Unity, Idaho.  The oldest daughter of Charles Dellis and Thelma (Stoddard) Winward.  We lived during the depression and the Second World War.  Money was scarce, so we did whatever we could to earn a few dollars.  During the war, there were girls who helped the farmers get their potato crops in while the men were all overseas.  We did this for three years.  Everyone did something to help.  We also knitted scarves and rolled bandages for the Red Cross.

I graduated in 1943 from good ole Burley High.  I then got a job with Gene Price in his café.  I met Harold Patchett in 1945 and we were married on April 24, 1946.   We moved around a lot ending up in Nampa, Idaho in 1960.  We bought the J&T market a small grocery store.  Here we raised our kids and they learned to work hard.  While living at the store we met and loved so many people who have remained dear to our hearts.

After nineteen years in Nampa in December 1978, we moved to Caldwell.  I had a big garden and church activities to keep me busy. I had plenty to do, but Harold’s projects ran out.  One day I was looking in the want ads and saw the Idaho Press Tribune needed someone to do a paper route in Caldwell.  I called and was hired right over the phone.  It was the best job I ever had.  I was healthier than I ever had been.  We delivered papers to the merchants of Caldwell and the people at the courthouse.  I met lots of great people there.

I am proud to be an American and grateful for my ancestors who joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints early on and came to America so we could have the best of both worlds.

I worked hard most of my life.  I am blessed to have a wonderful family and to know so many people.  I leave behind my three children; Maylan (Lois) Patchett, Dorothy (Read)Young, and Julene Thornton.  A posterity of twenty grandchildren and lots of great-grandchildren.  I am going to meet my husband, my three sisters; Elva McCan, Naomi Young and Mary Ruth Platt, my precious grandmother and my granddaughter Tammy.

Our mother passed away on May 15, 2017, at the home of her daughter Dorothy.  Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 12:00 p.m. at the LDS Chapel at 504 11th Ave North in Nampa.  A viewing will be held Friday, May 19th from 5-7 p.m. at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel and from 11-11:45 a.m. prior to services at the church.

“Ella honey get me the oil can and I’ll give you a sloppy kiss” Thanks, Mack and all the others I got to know in the circulation department.
