LaVerne Streight Obituary

LaVerne Aller Streight passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at home with his family.  Although lung cancer shaped his final days, the Lord, LaVerne loved and served, formed his life and relationships.

LaVerne was born July 11, 1929 to Thomas & E. DeEll Streight in Rapid City, SD.  He joined three older siblings, and seven more would follow.  Strong bonds, and shared responsibility for family, prompted the oldest siblings to lightheartedly refer to themselves as the “Big Four”. He attended school in Spearfish, SD until the large family moved to Oregon City, OR before LaVerne started high school.  He graduated in 1947, after serving as student body president his senior year.  He received a B.A. in Education from Cascade College in 1951, and an M.S. in Education from Oregon College of Education in 1958. LaVerne married his high school sweetheart, E. Mardell Grimm June 19, 1948.  Their loving relationship blessed many, and provided a strong foundation for their four children, their spouses, and grandchildren. After 49 happy years together, Mardell passed away.  LaVerne married Gwendolyn McClung February 19, 2000 in Nampa, ID.  Their nearly 19 years together continued the warm tradition of love and generosity for the Streight family and many others. LaVerne was a gifted educator, teaching middle school and older elementary students for 31 years in Canby, West Linn, and Lake Oswego, OR.  After retiring, Dad continued to enrich many lives by volunteering at Northwest Nazarene University and serving with Gwen as greeters at Nampa College Church of the Nazarene.  It was his delight to support both his church and the University financially, and in prayer.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his wife Mardell, his daughter Marilee Shively, his parents, and six siblings.  He is survived by his wife Gwen Streight, daughter Julia (Doug) Bloomquist, son David (Joy) Streight, daughter Karen (Keith) Horwood, son-in-law Norm (Cindy) Shively, step-son Ron (Judy) Galloway, step-daughter Gwenette (David) Bryant; Grandchildren: Eric (Diana) Bloomquist, Becky (Tom) Luper, Erin (Caleb) Conlee, Jonathan Streight, Megan Horwood, Timothy (Jasmine) Streight, Evan (Annie) Horwood, Scott Shively, Natalie Streight, Nathan Horwood, Collin Horwood.  Great grandchildren:  Annabelle, Madeline Bloomquist; Harrison, Foster Conlee; Astrid, Tamsin Streight; Caleb, Emma Luper; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service is planned to celebrate LaVerne’s life Friday afternoon, January 4, 2019 at 2 PM.  College Church of the Nazarene, 504 E Dewey Avenue, Nampa, ID.  There will be a time of visitation and viewing at the Nampa Funeral Home (415 12th Ave S, Nampa), 7-8 PM Thursday evening, January 3, 2019.  Flowers may be sent, or donations may be made to Northwest Nazarene University in his name, 623 So. University Blvd., Nampa, Idaho 83686. Burial will follow January 7 in Portland, OR.  Funeral arrangements are under the care of John VanManen, and Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel.
