Verda Allen Obituary

Verda Allen passed peacefully at her assisted living home on August 10, 2019.  Verda was born at Kuna, Idaho February 16, 1923 to Thomas H. & Nora Davis Wood.  She was the 7th of 9 children born to this union. She lived all her life in the Boise Valley with exception of two years near Idaho City.  Her mother passed when she was very young.  Her Dad later married Effie Howard when Verda was in high school.  Five brothers were added to the family in the next few years. She attended schools in Meridian, graduating from Meridian High School in 1941.  While in high school, she lived with Mrs. Snow in Meridian, doing light housekeeping for her board. After graduating from Boise Business college, Verda was employed by the Idaho First National Bank in Meridian.  She married Stanford Allen on October 14, 1943.  They made their home in the Lakeview Community south of Lake Lowell, where together they farmed, grew fruit, had a small dairy and raised beef cattle.  Three children, Lois, Laneal and Rex, were welcomed to this union.  Family was very important to Verda and she took every opportunity to have family together.  She loved them, each and every one very much.  Verda was active in the community, helping with activities at Lakeview School and was a member of the Lakeview Friendly Neighbors Club and Lakeview Grange.  In the mid-fifties, Verda took employment with the Credit Bureau of Nampa as a temporary, part-time receptionist.  The job lasted 27 years, the last few as Manager. She was active in several professional organizations, receiving numerous awards.  A 71 year member of the local, state & National Grange, she held numerous offices and was awarded State of Idaho Granger of the Year twice.  She retired from her “temporary” job when Stanford became ill.  After his passing she moved to Nampa.  She remained active in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, the Grange and the Friendly Neighbors Club and church.  She was a long time member of First Christian church, where she sang in the choir and was active in the women’s ministry.  In November, 2011, a stroke changed her life in a moment.  She moved to assisted living, where she made new friends among the staff and residents.  She was always happiest being with her family and attending church when she was able to do so.

Verda is survived by her children:  Lois Hillman, Laneal and Ted Chirin, Rex and Judy Allen, 1 granddaughter, 4 grandsons, 10 great grandchildren, her 5 younger brothers, Wayne, Eddie, Gary, Ronald, and Harry Wood, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and step-mother, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.

Her family would like to thank Verda’s Park Place Assisted Living family for their kind, compassionate, loving care and friendship these past almost 8 years, truly providing her with a good home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity in memory of Verda.
