Obituary

Bonnie Kerns Obituary Bonnie Louise Ansotegui was born to Dorothy Inchausti and Domingo Ansotegui in Boise, Idaho on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Fittingly, Bonnie exuded peace and lived simply. Bonnie left the earth on March 16, 2025, peacefully and with family. Bonnie brought calm and grace to those around her. Bonnie was the oldest of five children. Her siblings refer to her as the peacekeeper and a saint. Bonnie led her siblings with a quiet sense of leadership- intentionally making time for each of them and modeling how to be a good person through her actions. Bonnie attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Bishop Kelly High School. Invested in her Basque heritage, she studied Basque and danced in the Oinkaris. At 25 years old, after she returned from the very first Boise State exchange program to the Basque Country, Bonnie met Dave Kerns at the softball park. She turned him down for a date the first time he asked, but Dave asked again and the two went on to share a marriage of 45 years and a love so great that Dave continually remarks, "How did I get so lucky?" Dave and Bonnie welcomed their daughter Nikki in 1980 and Ryan (Patxi) in 1983. Throughout their childhood, Bonnie instilled in her children the importance of working hard, serving others, and being faith-filled. Bonnie worked at the Bureau of Reclamation for 33 years and retired as the director of Human Resources. She retired early from her career so she could spend more time with her grandkids, her friends, and continue to volunteer. She constantly served others in small ways, and also volunteered her time at the Mission, Corpus Christi House, St. Vincent, and Sacred Heart Church. Bonnie was devoted to the Catholic faith and remained steadfast in her faith even when encountering serious health conditions. Bonnie had many incredible connections with all those that she met throughout her life. She saw the best in each of her family members, friends, and grandkids and had a special connection with each one. Bonnie will be remembered as the glue that held many groups together. She brought a quiet comfort to any situation and made everyone feel valued. Bonnie was never the loudest person in the room, but she was the easiest to be around. She was able to love all people and empathize with those going through hard times. Shell be remembered for her skill on the softball field, her amazing lasagna, and how she always cheered on all her grandchildren from the sidelines at all their activities. Her grandchildren will miss her back scratches and close comfort during church; the Ansotegui pew will feel empty without her. Bonnie is survived by her mother-in-law Dorothy Kerns, her husband David Kerns, her children Nikki (Dustin) Kerns, Patxi (Naomi) Kerns, her grandchildren Patxi Bentz, Kepa Bentz, Maialen Bentz, Kian Kerns, Lucas Kerns, Molly Kerns, and her siblings Christine Ansotegui, Gina Urquidi, Daniel (Tamara) Ansotegui, and Toni (Alberto) Ansotegui. We will celebrate Bonnies life with a Rosary at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:00 am on March 31st, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am celebrated by Fr. Oscar Jaramillo. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Sacred Heart Catholic School in her honor. Other non-profits close to her heart were Corpus Commons and Interfaith Sanctuary. We would like to thank the amazing doctors and nurses at St. Lukes in Boise, especially Annie Barlow, Dr. Buddhu, and Dr. Patel for providing comfort, love, and hope during a very difficult time.
