Brian Lloyd Wilkening of Nampa, Idaho, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, following a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He left this world just one day after celebrating his 75th birthday.
Brian was born on June 26, 1951, in Mora, Minnesota, to Lloyd and Ardis Wilkening, the third of four children. It was during his youth working in the family welding business that he forged his legendary work ethic and foundational mechanical skills. Around this same time, he met the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Joanne Becker. The two were wed on September 2, 1971, embarking on a beautiful 54-year journey of marriage, deep companionship, and family.
In February 1970, Brian enlisted in the United States Air Force. During the Vietnam War, he honorably served two tours of duty as a Munitions Systems Specialist. He later cross-trained into aircraft crash and rescue firefighting while stationed at Minot AFB in North Dakota. He was honorably discharged in February 1974, carrying with him a lifelong appreciation for mechanics, structure, and hard work.
Following his military service, Brian’s career led his family on a series of adventures out West. In 1984, he, Joanne, and their daughters relocated from New Brighton, Minnesota, to Ashton, Idaho, where Brian worked as a heavy equipment operator for Fremont County before transitioning to the U.S. Forest Service in Island Park, Idaho. In 1999, Brian and Joanne moved to the scenic Black Hills of South Dakota, where he continued operating heavy machinery with the Forest Service. Their journey took them to Buffalo, Wyoming in 2007, where Brian worked for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) until he and Joanne officially retired in 2015, settling down in Nampa, Idaho, to be closer to family.
Brian was a man who truly never met a stranger. Gifted with an easygoing nature and a genuine interest in people, he could strike up a vibrant conversation with absolutely anyone, anywhere he went. His warmth, quick wit, and endless stories made him a beloved fixture in his community and among friends.
A consummate tinkerer and gearhead, Brian had a passion for old, American-made cars and spent countless hours drag racing his vintage Honda motorcycles. He possessed a rare, innate talent for understanding how things worked. He often joked that he could operate absolutely anything except an airplane or a locomotive—though he always made sure to add that he could "probably figure out the locomotive".
Above all else, Brian was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne; his two daughters, Brenda (Chad) Barker and Pamela (Brian) Amey; his brothers Weldon (Ann) Wilkening and Leighton (Susan) Wilkening, and his sister Charlene Douglas. Brian is also survived by his six cherished grandchildren: Rachel, David, Kyle, Nicole, Colin, and Zachary. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Ardis.
Brian’s legacy of laughter, service, mechanical ingenuity, and unyielding love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him.
