Obituary

Colene V. (Keeney) Borger, 96, peacefully passed from this life to the next on December 3, 2015 to see Jesus face to face and to be reunited with Lyle her loving husband of 66 years. She was born on August 7, 1919 in Lucas County Iowa to Harley and Anna (Woods) Keeney. She grew up on an Iowa farm with three brothers and four sisters. Following high school graduation from Chariton, Iowa HS in 1937 she prepared to be a teacher and taught in a one room school house for two years. On July 21, 1940 she married her sweetheart and the love of her life Lyle C. Borger who also grew up in Chariton. In 1943 she moved with her two year old daughter Carolyn to San Diego, CA to be near Lyle at Camp Pendleton after he enlisted in the Marine Corps. After Lyle was stationed in Hawaii she moved back to Chariton with her daughter to live with family. It was during that time that she experienced the most difficult days of her life. She received a brief letter from Lyle stating "that they would ship out the next day and were headed to a little island called Iwo Jima". For four months she did not hear another word other than the newspaper and radio announcing "Iwo Battle Toughest In Marines History". It was her faith in God and the strong will of an Iowa farm girl that got her through. Following World War II two more children were born into their home a daughter Donna and a son Stephen. In 1955 they entered the first pastoral assignment and were truly partners in ministry for 45 years. Colene loved Jesus, loved the Church, loved people and worked tirelessly in the church wherever she was needed. Although she was not the one ordained she held almost every position in the church except as preacher and she would do that anytime she was asked. They served churches in Iowa, Illinois, and Colorado and in 1995 moved to Nampa and served at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene in senior adult ministry for several years. She was the quintessential hostess and entertained hundreds of guest in her home over the years. She did work some in department store retail sales but most of her life was given to her family and her church. She had many artistic gifts that included being a seamstress, teaching ceramic classes, and in her sixties she took oil painting classes and became a very accomplished artist. No matter where she went Colene never met a stranger and she was delighted to hear your story as long as you would let her tell you about her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, two brothers and one sister. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Jerry) Cordell of Tustin, CA, and Donna (Richard) Suman of Ashland, KY and a son, Stephen (Carol) of Nampa. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, a brother and three sisters. The family wants to specially thank Sunnyridge nursing staff and Legacy Hospice for their kind and loving care. A funeral service is planned for Monday December 7, 2015 10:00 a.m. at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene, 601 16th Ave So. A public viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise with a private family committal service on Tuesday. Arrangements are under the direction of Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel, 415 12th Ave. So. 442-8171. An online guest book is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com.
