Obituary

Dan LeRoy McGee Sr., 88, passed away on May 24th, 2025, at his home in Nampa, Idaho.

Dan grew up in Valley City, North Dakota where he had fond memories of growing up and playing along the Sheyenne River with his three brothers and friends. He graduated from Valley City High School (1954) as a three-sport letterman in football, basketball, & baseball–earning All State Awards in football and basketball. After high school, Dan and his childhood friend decided to take the summer to hitchhike to Seattle and down the west coast to California. After their trip, Dan was convinced to move to the sunny Golden State.

Dan attended and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College where he played college basketball. Dan was a member of the United States Army Reserve and the United States Air National Guard and earned his master's degree from University of Northern Colorado. In 1959, Dan made his way to Southern California, to teach Physical Education at Wilmington Jr. High, where he would meet his best friend and love of his life, Inez McGee (McCabe). They married in December 1961, back in Inez's hometown in Winona, Minnesota. In 1963, Dan started teaching social studies, PE, & Drivers Education, and coaching basketball and baseball at West High School in Torrance, California. In 1970, Dan became head basketball coach and P.E. teacher in Winona, MN. After four years as a Winhawk, he returned to West High to teach, coach, and become Athletic Director. As Head Basketball Coach, Dan was awarded Coach of the Year by the Southern California Basketball Coaches Association in 1985 and provided the opportunity for his basketball teams to travel and play basketball in Japan, New Zealand, & Australia. Dan's dedication to his students and athletes would inspire his son and two of his granddaughters to become coaches and teachers.

Dan and Inez were happily married for 62 years and shared an adventurous spirit that took them to all 50 states and 38 countries throughout the world. When retiring in 1996 after a 38-year career in education, Dan and Inez spent two years full time on the road traveling the country in their motorhome visiting new places and spending time with family and friends before moving to Sun Lakes, AZ. Dan and Inez then settled in Nampa, ID where they would get to spend their time watching their three granddaughters grow up.

Of all his adventures, Dan's favorites were being a proud and loving husband to Inez, father to Danny, grandfather to Morgan, Abby, Bailey, great grandfather to Indiana, son, brother, son-in-law, uncle, and good friend. He was very proud of his family and was a role model for them living the values of love, loyalty, dedication, and unconditional support. Dan deeply cherished time with his friends and family–he was always friendly, outgoing, & sociable. He enjoyed meeting new people, staying connected to old friends, and watching basketball games (especially Skyview High School–a Hawk fan since 1996.) Whether it was riding his bike down to the pier in Redondo Beach for coffee before school in California, "going to work" after retirement, which meant going golfing in Sun Lakes, AZ, or going to the "office" at Sarah's Bagels in Nampa with his Treasure Valley buddies–Dan loved his time chatting with friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. & Vida McGee, his siblings Benjamin & Barbara McGee, and his wife Inez McGee. He is survived by his brothers James D. & Edward McGee, his son Dan, Jr., his grandchildren Morgan (Raymond Mosman), Abby, Bailey, and his great granddaughter Indiana.
