Jordan Valley

Darrel William Francke, 83, of Jordan Valley, Oregon, was called home on January 24, 2025.

Darrel was born in Nampa, Idaho, to Philip and Harret Francke, the youngest of five children. He was raised in Nampa, where his early years were shaped by family, music, and a strong sense of independence. While attending Nampa High School, Darrel distinguished himself as the first student to letter in music, earning that honor in 1956 and 1957—an early testament to his remarkable musical talent.

In October of 1958, Darrel married Kay Aber. Together they raised four children: Terri Stoltz, Tammy Slagel, Phillip Francke, and P-Joe Francke. Darrel later served his country through the National Guard and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, before returning to Nampa following the completion of his service.

Darrel eventually moved his family to California, where he attended school for aluminum welding, a trade he mastered and took great pride in throughout his life. During this time, his lifelong love for music continued to flourish. A gifted guitarist, Darrel recorded several guitar sessions and went on to become the lead guitarist for Dick Cates and the Chessmen, performing with the band from 1960 to 1966.

In February of 1975, Darrel settled in Jordan Valley, Oregon, a place that truly felt like home. Later in life, following his divorce from Kay, Darrel reunited with his childhood friend Carolyn, whom he married in 1992.

Darrel was a true man of the land. He found joy in the outdoors and lived a life rooted in hard work and self-reliance. He loved hunting—especially bow hunting—as well as trapping, working as a ranch hand, and perfecting his craft as an aluminum welder. Those who knew him often said there was no one better at it.

Darrel is survived by his first wife, Kay Aber; his four children; his grandchildren; and his great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Carolyn Belvis Francke, his parents, and his siblings.

Darrel’s life was marked by music, craftsmanship, and a deep connection to the land. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his remarkable talents, and the lasting legacy he leaves with his family and all who knew him.
