Double Hill Obituary Double E Hill was born November 5, 1923 in Cameron, Oklahoma to Elmer E. and Otis Lenora Hill. He died in Nampa, Idaho on July 26, 2022.
He attended Cameron public schools. His undergraduate studies were done at Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, Oklahoma, the Guildhall School of Music, London, England, and Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, Idaho. He graduated from NNU with a Bachelor of Music in 1948. Graduate studies were done at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Idaho (Master of Music in Music History, 1954). He received the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Musicology from the University of Illinois in 1962. He served three years in the U.S. Army in the 99th Infantry Division (Germany and Belgium) and was awarded three battle stars (Battle of the Bulge, Remagen Bridgehead, and the Ruhr Pocket.) He was on the faculty of NNU for 38 years (1948-86) where he was a professor of music history and literature, music and art, church music, founder and director of the choral ensemble Northwesterners for twenty-seven years. Twelve overseas tours were made with this ensemble. Two of the tours were under the sponsorship of the National Music Council and the USO (Pacific Command and the European Command). Ten Mission Tours to seventeen countries were made for the Church of the Nazarene. He was Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts (1954-86) and Head of the Music Department (1954-1980). He was elected to NNUs Faculty Emeriti in 1986. Following his retirement from NNU, he was Chairman of the School of Music at Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, Oklahoma (1987-1990.) He was the founder and director of the SNU University Singers. While at SNU he made Mission Tours (to Europe and New Zealand) with the University Singers for the Church of the Nazarene. He was on the faculty at European Nazarene College, Buesingen, Germany for four years (1992-1995 and 1999-2000). He married Helen Louise Robertson in 1946. They had two sons: Kent (Janice Hurn) and Mark (Kathy Murdock).
Double E is survived by his wife, his sons, five grandchildren, and six great grandsons.
It is the desire of Double E. and Helen Hill that there be a joint memorial service when both have passed.
