Fern Parry Obituary Fern L. Parry, 95, of Nampa, died peacefully in her sleep on September 28, 2022. Fern was born on March 2, 1927, at home to David Howard Van Houten and Clara Van Houten at Midway, a small farming community between Nampa and Caldwell. Fern was the youngest of three children. Her brother and sister would tease her that she had been born in a barn, as the home had been originally a barn. Her early years were spent on that small acreage. A neighbor girl, Jean Duspiva Fisher and Fern were born six months apart and became life-time friends, they spent years together with their parents at the Nampa Valley Grange. They called themselves "The Grange Babies". The family moved to Nampa in 1935, where she attended school. She met Phyllis Stone McLellan in the fifth grade and became lifelong friends also. In her sophomore year at Nampa High, a new student, Delbert Parry, caught her eye and she asked him the Sadie Hawkins Dance. They dated through high school. Delbert graduated in l944, entered the Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. She remained committed to her Delbert and graduated from Nampa High in l945. Delbert came home and they were married August 11, 1946, in Nampa at the Methodist Church. They made their home in Nampa where they raised their daughter, Diane, and son, Dennis.
She was an active member of Nampa First United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and helped lead MYF. She dedicated many hours of service through various Church events. She was also involved in her childrens Scouting activities. Fern and several neighborhood ladies formed a club that they named 30/40. The ladies were teased through the years that the name be changed to reflect the age of the group, but it always remained 30/40. They would meet for lunches, dinners, and craft projects, even shopping excursions to Portland. She was an accomplished seamstress making most of her clothing and Dianes, including Dianes wedding gown. She willingly gave of her time volunteering to the Nampa Exchange Club, Civic Center, and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She supported Delbert and her son Dennis with their Snake River Stampede Rodeo commitments, even though the Rodeo was not her cup of tea. She worked briefly outside the home to help supplement her children college expenses. Fern became an enthusiastic golfer and spent time on the valley area courses with Delbert and friends. They were frequent visitors to the Oregon coast playing on several golf courses there. In the early l970s, they bought property at Cascade, spending many enjoyable years there, sharing fun times with friends, and also lots of golf. They were members of the Nampa Elks and loved dancing up a storm there on Saturday nights with their friends. They became charter members of the Nampa Rec Center when it opened and exercised there often. Fern and Delbert had a marriage lasting nearly 66 years. Those years included a lot of love, laughter and enjoying life.
Fern is survived by her children, Diane Hohrein (Ed) of Lincoln City, Oregon, Dennis Parry (Katie) of Nampa, and three grandsons, Brian Hohrein (Molly), Prescott Arizona, David Parry (Kellie), Salem, Oregon, and Samuel Parry (Kelsey), Boise. Also, five great-grandchildren, Madelyne and Sophia Hohrein, Grace and Ethan Parry and Cooper Parry.
