Harold Vernon Fender passed away peacefully to be with his Lord in Nampa, Idaho on April 7, 2017 at the age of 90. Harold was born in Kingsburg, South Dakota November 19, 1926 to Fred and Mabel Fender. Harold was the second of five children-two sisters and two brothers. He went to first and second grades at Kingsburg before moving to Center, Nebraska where he spent the next two years. He then moved with his family to Bassett, Nebraska where his father farmed. He started helping his father on the farm in 1934 and continued until he graduated from high school in 1944. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve after graduation. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, Illinois. During World War II he served in the South Pacific and the Coral Sea on an LST amphibious ship. He enjoyed the time spent on the ship as a storekeeper 3rd class. The ship was put out of commission at Orange, Texas. After his discharge in 1946, he returned home to Bassett. Shortly after that, he was offered a job by his uncle to haul milk to Dairyman's Co-op Creamery in Caldwell, Idaho. He married Donna Truby in Yuma, Arizona in 1948. To this union were born two children-Dennis and Sherry. Harold then started working for Western Block, Inc in Nampa. He worked there for 40 years doing a variety of jobs. He married Twila Fender in 1976. He retired in 1992. Harold loved playing golf, hunting and fishing. He and Twila loved the outdoors, going backpacking in the Sawtooths and traveling the Pacific Northwest, Canada, Alaska and especially the Oregon coast.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Delbert and Donnie, sister Leola, son Dennis and daughter Sherry. He is survived by Twila, his wife of 41 years, sister Mary Jean Cook (Louie), daughter-in-law Margery Fender, son-in-law Dan Bell, step-daughter Shirley Fender (Jerry Vassallo), step-son Fred Fender (Laurie), and grandchildren Scott (Kayla), Stacie Carr, Dana Bell, Denice Bell, Anna Marie Laurance (Dennis), Katie Howard (Drew), Diana Shafer (Joe), 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service to honor and celebrate the life of Harold Fender will be held at 2 PM on Friday, April 14, 2018 at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel, 415 12th Ave. So. Nampa 442-8171 with military honors by personnel from the US Navy. Burial will follow at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. An online guest book is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com
