Harold S. Wilson, 89, of Homedale, passed away after a brief illness early Saturday morning, July 2. He died gently and peacefully in the arms of his wife of 67 years, Mary (Schaffeld) Wilson. Harold was born at home on January 23, 1927, and was the 11th of 12 children born to Lemen E. and Nancy Wilson, in Nyssa, Oregon. He was the last of his siblings, and thus held a very special place in the lives of his many nieces and nephews. The hallmarks of Harolds life were marked by strong family ties, integrity, hard work, and many close friends. The door is always open at the Wilson household where you cant leave without something to eat and drink. A place where friends quickly become "family". Harold began tending sheep when he was 5 years old with his older brother Bill on the family ranch. That set the stage for the development of a toughness that quickly became his trademark. He was a good athlete growing up, and among his many favorite stories were those of the early semi-pro baseball leagues in Oregon and Idaho. He attended Oregon Trails elementary school, and graduated from Nyssa High School. He served in the Army in WWII in Okinawa, and was on a troop ship to Japan when the war ended. Harold returned to Nyssa and Vale where he farmed and raised cattle. He then opened an Ideal Gas and Propane franchise which brought the family to Homedale. His passion was driving truck which led him to form his own trucking company. He later delivered vehicles and trucks all over the country for several Treasure Valley businesses. He worked until he was 85. Harold was elected Mayor of Homedale when he was 80, and is credited with making many city improvements during his 4 year term. He also served on the Homedale School Board, and always enjoyed being involved with his childrens sports and activities, including years of umpiring baseball. Through the years, Harold enjoyed spending special time in Hells Canyon, and looked forward to the annual "hunting camp" trip there with his boys. Harold is survived by his wife Mary, and sons; Tim (Lori) of Grangeville, Jeff (Sandy) of Abbeville, S.C., Scott (Shellye) of Caldwell, Eric (Tina) of Wilsonville, OR, Daughters; Sue (Dwight) Uhlenkott of Wilder, Lisa Edens (Jim Manion) of Boise. He is preceded in death by daughter Chris Nash, sons Steve and Matt, and grandson Anthony Wilson. Harold and Mary are extremely proud of their 23 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. Harold was a great Dad and was affectionately referred to as Pops, Papa, Grandpa, Harold, Harry, Uncle Harold, but never "old man". A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 am, followed by a Funeral Mass with Military Honors at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 7, at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 1122 W. Linden St. (corner of Linden and Farmway Rd.) in Caldwell. A reception will follow immediately at the Basque Center in Homedale.
