She attended a country grade school and graduated from high school in 1935. In 1937 the family moved to Idaho where Ruth lived for five years before moving to Seattle, WA, just before the outbreak of World War II. Ruths love for travel led her to sign up to go to Japan in 1952 where she worked for the 1st Radio Broadcasting and Leaflet Group, Psychological Warfare, U.S. Army, in Tokyo. She loved working in Japan and climbed Mt. Fuji during the two years she was there. The Army sent her on a special assignment to South Korea where she worked with prisoners of war during the Korean Conflict. Ruth met Thomas Murphy, a captain in the United States Navy, at the First Church of the Nazarene following her return to Seattle. They were married in 1958 and lived in Seattle for over 40 years where they were faithful members of the Aurora Church of the Nazarene. Over the years she worked as a secretary at Boeing, Washington Natural Gas and Seattle Pacific University. Tom and Ruth enjoyed traveling to Europe, the Orient, Alaska and the Caribbean and spent every other winter in Hawaii after retirement. Tom passed away in 1998 and in 2001 Ruth returned to Idaho to be near her sister Faith Lee Williams at Karcher Estates. She was a member of Nampa First Church of the Nazarene.
