Henry "Hank" James
Sydor

Henry James "Hank" Sydor was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada on January 29th, 1937 to Verna and William Sydor, the second of what would become four boys. Hank attended Maple Leaf Elementary School and then Welland High and Vocational School, with a focus on technical education. He graduated at age 17 and after a short period in the Canadian Air Force he attended Haileybury Mining Institute in Northern Ontario for two years (1956 1958). He later attended Sir George Williams University in Montreal. Hank began a career in the mining and exploration field, with job sites in Ontario, Quebec and Northern Manitoba. The practical field experience served him well as he became involved with management as well as on site experiences.
In 1960 he married Maureen Gooden. Hank and Maureen were blessed with two daughters, Alison Jane and Jody Anne (David Jones). The family lived in various Canadian cities, as well as Seattle and Portland, as Hanks career progressed. Hank and Maureen were later divorced and in 1988 Hank married Marlys Berg (the mother of his two step-daughters, Michelle (Steve Oester) and Teresa Tulloch. Hank and Marlys shared five grandchildren, Nicole and Rachel Oester of Denver, CO, Brendan and Dylan Jones of Vancouver, BC and Connor Tulloch of Nampa, ID. Hank was devoted to his children and grandchildren they were his pride and joy and he considered them to be the best part of his life.
Hanks career in the mining industry meant that he travelled throughout the world meeting dignitaries and corporate heads, as an international marketing executive for several different companies. He travelled extensively to countries such as Australia, Turkey, China, Russia, Tunisia and many countries in Latin America. He followed his daughter, Alisons, career as a professional mountain biker with great pride and enthusiasm, spending hours making scrapbooks of newspaper and magazine articles and photos. He was able to travel to many of her races around the world, sometimes accompanied by Marlys and/or Jody.
For over a decade Hank has been a monthly contributor to the National Drillers Buyers Guide magazine, now World Wide Drilling Resources. He was still writing for them at the time of his death. After retiring from mining, Hank worked part-time at the Denver Art Museum and in 2004 when he and Marlys moved to Nampa, ID, he volunteered at the Nampa Police Department. He made many lifelong friends throughout his career and kept in touch with many even after retirement.
His illness this past summer brought many family members and friends back to Nampa to visit. He was very grateful for their show of concern and the time they spent together. His last few days were spent in Vancouver enjoying time with his daughters and grandsons. He died at his home in Nampa, ID on November 17 of natural causes. He was 74.
Hank is survived by his wife, Marlys, daughters Alison and Jody Sydor (David) Jones, of Vancouver BC, brother Dave Sydor (Susan) of St. Catherines, Ontario, step-daughters Michelle (Steve) Oester of Arvada, CO, Teresa Tulloch of Nampa, ID, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and his loyal canine companion, Scout. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William "Bill" and John.
A celebration of Hanks life will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel.
