Obituary

Hubert C. Fields, Jr., known to friends and family as "Buster", was born March 18,1932 in Olympia, Washington to Hubert C. Fields Sr., and Florence Fields (nee Chabert). Buster grew up and attended school in Yelm, WA, graduating from Yelm High School in June 1950. During his high school years he worked for his father at Fields Motor Company, honing his mechanical skills. The day after graduation he left Yelm to work for his uncles, Charlie and Arlie Fields, in Vale, Oregon. He worked in their auto repair business in Vale, working with his uncles for three years. Buster volunteered to serve his country by joining the Army in 1953, serving in England, and later with the Oregon National Guard.

He married Sally Winder of Vale, Oregon, on 17 October 1956, and they raised their children Jackie "Jack" and Rachelle "Shelley" Fields in Ontario. Buster and his uncle Arlie opened Gravel Products in Ontario in the early 1960's. Buster and Sally later purchased Arlie's share and operated a successful truck repair and gravel business for over 30 years. Sally passed away in 1992. Buster later married Norma Smith where they remained together until her death in 2025.

Buster loved the outdoors and spent his time cutting wood in the summer and elk hunting and snowmobiling in the winter at the Joyce Cabin on the North Fork and Sumpter with Casey Schoorl and many other companions. He also was a skilled pilot accumulating over 800 hours in the Cessna 210 he co-owned with Louie McDaniel. Buster took great pride in watching his grandchildren mature into successful adults.

Buster was preceded in death by his parents, sister Colette Gunkel, his wife Sally, and second wife Norma. He is survived by brother Robert Fields and his wife June, his children Jack (Tish) and Shelley, grandchildren, Luke (Amanda) Fields, Chase (Amber) Fields, Sam Greenblatt and Hannah Greenblatt, one great-grandchild, Thomas Fields and a great-grandchild Fields on the way.

Services will be held at the Ontario BPOE Elks Lodge 1690 in Ontario, OR on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 1:00 pm. A light luncheon will follow, and attendees are invited to share memories of Buster.
