Born on August 31, 1945, in Bryant, Illinois, Jerry lived a life rooted in faith, family, and love. If you knew Jerry, you knew that his family was his whole world. Nothing mattered more to him than the people he loved, and he made sure they knew it every single day.
He was a man after God’s own heart, never shy about his faith. He would say to anyone who would listen – and plenty who wouldn’t – “Jesus is Lord. He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.” He didn’t just speak those words; he lived them. When God called, he followed.
Jerry showed his love through action. He was always the first to show up – ready to fix what was broken, sit beside you in a hospital room, cheer the loudest at a grandchild’s game or performance, or quietly be there when someone needed comfort. If you were hurting, he was there. If you needed help, he was already on his way.
His adventurous spirit carried him from Akron, Ohio, to Anaheim, California, where he took a leap of faith and started a print shop using the savings from the sale of his home. After more than 20 years, when the family closed the doors of the business, the adventure continued as he moved to Idaho to come alongside his family in retirement. He lived boldly, trusting God to guide his steps.
By his side through it all was the love of his life, Audrey Carol Scalf. They were married on December 26, 1964, and spent more than 61 years walking hand in hand through life’s joys and challenges – a true example of enduring love and partnership.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Audrey Carol Scalf; his son, Jerry Brian Scalf (Kimberly Ann); his daughter, Kimberly Hope Bright (James Richard); his grandchildren, Zachariah James Bright, Seth Richard Bright, Bryanna Hope Bright, Autumn Kimry Greenwood (Mark Edward), and Megan Brittney Schlag (Connor Mark); his great-grandchild, Adaline Audrey Greenwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Percy Scalf and Lillian Effie Scalf; his siblings, Jesse Eugene, Pamela Darlene, and David Lee; and his grandson, Bryce Jesse Scalf.
Jerry wasn’t a perfect man, and he wouldn’t have claimed to be. He had his faults, including a temper at times, but what defined him was how quickly he made things right. He never wanted anything to come between him and his family, and he worked hard to keep those bonds strong.
His legacy is one of faith, devotion, and presence. He loved deeply, lived fully, and left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
