John 'Buck' DeMotte RETIRED U. S. ARMY MAJOR Obituary My life began in Nampa, Idaho as the only child of Ruby Violet Zimmerman Yates and John "Jack" Benson DeMotte on February 9, 1945, and flashed by in only 80 short and lively years. I finally succumbed from a heart attack on March 5, 2025. A Memorial Service will full military honors be held on April 11, 2025, at 10 AM at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 N Horseshoe Bend Rd, Boise, ID 83714. A sunset farewell will be held at a later date when the weather is warmer at Guffey Bridge at Celebration Park.
Funeral Blues by W. H. Auden,
Another Time, 1940
"Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let the aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is dead
Put crepe bows round the white necks of public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song:
I thought that love would last forever; I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothin now can ever come to any good."
Now to:
My parents and grandparents, my stillborn siblings and infant sister, all who have now gone on
My surviving relatives, school friends, and acquaintances in Puget Sound, Treasure Valley and all over Idaho, the West, America and the warm globe -
My ex, Penny and stepdaughter Jennifer -
My Army chums, instructors, students, troops, C&GS/ROTC cadre, fellow Rangers and the Cavalry Officer Corp on three continents
My professors, colleagues and students, within four fine universities (Go! Vandals, Broncos, Boilermakers & Ducks), the Boise School District and Idaho Dept of Corrections
All those water/snow skiers, cavers, sky/scuba divers, bikers and hot spring skinny dippers who shared their space and to those who cared and loved
The doctors, nurses and their cohorts who watched over me for years
And, especially, the friends and family of my Sandra, who hung my moons and warmed my suns every day we were together
To these many special folk, whose vast mosaic of experience and influence has, bit by bit, thru song & dance, contributed to my very core, and given me reason to exist thru not just one, but at least three lifetimes. I return my deepest appreciation and thanks for being here with me in the greatest place and in the greatest time this planet will ever know
And, as I finally slip in under the warm, dark and safe covers of eternity, with the last murmurs of my heart echoing in my mind, I dream, knowing that it was, after all, a really fine, fine, journey.
Now, Buck, go to your happy place.
