Obituary

Jose 'Joe' Reyes Obituary Jose "Joe" Paul Reyes was born at home on December 26, 1947, in San Antonio, TX to Emilio and Guadalupe Reyes. He attended school until the age of 10, then went to work with his dad in the fields picking cotton, cherries, strawberries, oranges and tomatoes. Joe was the oldest of 12 children and became a natural caregiver to his siblings, always doing what was needed to support the family. Throughout his adolescent years, the family migrated through several states including Arkansas, Florida, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado and Washington, finally settling in Glenns Ferry, Idaho in 1964. They moved to Nampa just a year later. Joe met the love of his life, Veronica Lydia Antunes, on Halloween night 1965. She spotted a delicious red apple in his hand and asked for a bite, to which he said "No!" in his stubborn tone. But to his surprise, she was just as stubborn as he and responded, "If you dont, youll be in big trouble!" and he paid the price every day thereafter. You could say it was love at first bite! They were united in marriage on February 3rd,1967 at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Nampa, Idaho. Joe started his professional life at the age of 18, going to work for Carnation (Nestle USA). His forklift and machinery experience lead to a warehouse manager position which he held for 25 years before retiring for the first time. Joe briefly worked for Harris Moran, then moved onto Union Seed which later became known as Forge Genetics (Land OLakes). He ran machinery that cleaned alfalfa seed for the company for 25 years and retired for a second and final time in 2019. Joe & Lydia started their family with the birth of their oldest daughter Cassandra Monic "Boogie" in 1980. Lydia birthed their first son, Andrew James in 1985 who passed shortly thereafter. Their daughter Magdalena Inez followed in 1986, and son Jose Carlos completed the family in 1987. Having a family and watching his children grow up and graduate was one of Joes proudest achievements. Joe also achieved this goal at age 45 by graduating from Boise State University with his GED. Joe enjoyed playing baseball from an early age. His love of the game continued into his adult life where he played on teams with many friends and family members. He was also on a bowling league during his employment with Carnation and traveled around the state for tournaments. But if you were to ask anyone, theyd say his biggest love of all was his music. Joe had quite the collection with musical tastes including country, oldies, and LOTS of Tejano! During the summer, you could find him and Lydia at an outdoor festival enjoying the various artists who played that day. Watching his nephews band, Tejano Outlaw, always put the biggest smile on his face. He was the proudest Tio in the crowd! Joe always said that his music and Western movies were the two things that helped him relax and feel like he didnt have a worry in the world. They served as time machines, transporting him back to his early days in life. Joe was also extremely fond of the outdoors. He loved fishing, hunting and campingfinding joy in the planning details of the next adventure. It wasnt uncommon for him to throw a tarp, a sleeping bag and a pillow in the truck and head for the hills with some beer, his radio and a few sacks of food. He didnt need all the fancy frills---a campfire, a cold beer and the night sky would satisfy his soul for days. No one had ever met a prouder "Papa" than Joe was. His eyes gleamed with pride in the joy he found in becoming a grandparent. He shared his love of Johnny Cash and guns with his oldest grandson, Austin and he could never say "No" to his second grandson Aiden. Joe guided Dominic to be a sharp dressed man just like him, including his Stacey Adams shoes and fancy fedora hat. Youd always find him engaged in some epic pillow fights with his youngest grandsons Lincoln and Phoenix, or deep in conversation about football and history with Keagen or as Joe would call him, "Hee-gun". They will forever miss Papas "duh-dunt-duh-dunts" and his famous egg sandwiches. Joe loved them with all his heart, and they all loved Papa "mucho mucho". Joe was preceded in death by his parents: Emilio & Guadalupe Reyes, brother Freddy Reyes, sister Aurora Reyes, son Andrew Reyes, granddaughter Elena Johnston, niece Natalie Reyes, and great nephew Gavin Black. His memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of his devoted wife of 58 years, Veronica Lydia; his brothers Carlos (Martha) Reyes, Johnny (Tanya) Reyes, David Reyes, and Ernie Reyes (Kathy Vidales); his sisters Alice (David) Garcia, Linda (Sammy) Flores, Angie Reyes English, Sylvia Reyes (Arturo Lechuga), and Dora (Tom) Harris; his sister-in-law Lorraine Barbour; his children Cassandra Dulhanty (Jeremy Stom), Magdalena (DJ) Johnston, and Jose Carlos Reyes (Sheena Radford); his grandchildren Austin "Dad" Dulhanty, Aiden "Son" Dulhanty, Dominic Johnston, Lincoln Johnston, Phoenix Johnston, and Keagen Stom; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. May Joe forever rest in peace in the loving hands of the Lord. Services Visitation Tuesday January 7, 2025 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Nampa Funeral Home 415 12th Ave. So.
