Judith Lynne Angell entered the gates of Heaven on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at noon. She is rejoicing with the Lord Jesus and is no longer suffering the afflictions of this life.
Judith was born on July 4, 1939 to Lynn and Melvalyn Angell in Smith Center, Kansas. She and her parents resided in Portis, Kansas until she was three years old when they moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. When Judith was 9, her family loaded their belongings into a truck, travel trailer, and car, then began an adventure which would take them all over the western United States. Her father was a printer and was looking for a newspaper to buy. They moved frequently for the next five years. When Judith was 14, the family, weary of traveling, settled in Nampa, Idaho where her parents lived for the rest of their lives. Judith attended Nampa High School and graduated in 1957.
She attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington where she accepted Christ as her Savior on October 1 of 1957. She was discipled in the word of God through the Navigators program at Whitworth. In 1958, she returned to Nampa and attended Northwest Nazarene College where she graduated with an education degree. Judith taught in many different schools over the years, teaching every grade from kindergarten to college. She taught at Dilcon Navajo School, and Haven Acres School for Handicapped Children, among many others. In 1965, she moved to Oregon and began teaching at Salem Private School.
While on a bus ride to visit her parents in Nampa, she met her lifelong friend Wilma (Ford) Angellford. A year later they became roommates and were working with the youth at Labish Community Brethren in Christ Church. When two of the kids from their youth group entered foster care, Wilma and Judith asked if they could take them in. They became the first single foster parents in the state of Oregon. Over the next 13 years, Judith and Wilma cared for over 30 foster children. Many of the children were handicapped mentally, physically, or emotionally. Judith and Wilma helped their foster children find healing and help while teaching them the love of Jesus.
Judith received two master's degrees from the Oregon College of Education: one in education and one in counseling. She worked as a counselor for several years at a private office in Portland, Oregon.
In 1985, Judith went to Easter Island with Wycliffe Bible translators as a missionary teacher. The following year, she went to Pucallpa, Peru and worked at Wycliffes Yarinacocha linguist center teaching the children of missionaries who worked at the center and providing testing and continuing education for schools in remote areas of the Peruvian jungle. She returned to Oregon after serving with Wycliffe for a little more than two years. She continued her work as a teacher and counselor in western Oregon until 1992 when she moved back to Idaho to teach in Bruneau.
While living closer to her mother, Melva, Judith began to notice that her mother was beginning to lose her memory. In 1994, Judith moved back to Nampa to care for her mother. She worked at Nampa Christian School for two years as the school counselor until her mother needed more care and she was unable to continue working full time. During this period she taught part time and was also a substitute teacher for the Nampa school district. Judith diligently and lovingly cared for her mother until she herself was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in 2002. At that time, she was no longer able to care for her mother, and Melva went to live at a skilled nursing facility. Once the cancer was in remission, Judith began work at Rocky Mountain Resources where she worked as a counselor until she retired.
Judith spent her life teaching Sunday school, 4-H, AWANA, and other youth programs. She gave her life fully to the Lord Jesus and served Him with her whole heart! Though she never married or had children of her own, she was a mother to many. Psalm 113:9 was true of her life, "He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the LORD." Judith felt that God had called her to remain single and serve him. In addition to all the foster children she mothered, she was a second mother to Wilmas children: Twiggy, Marcellus, and Gwendolyn. She influenced their lives significantly. Gwendolyn and her husband David lived next door to Judith for 10 years, making sure she was cared for. Their children called her, "Grandma Angell." Judith would often say, "I am so glad that the Lord gave me you guys as a family!"
Judith was not afraid to ask hard questions and would often ask, "Are you going to church? Are you reading your Bible? Are you praying?" She cared for what was most important: she cared for peoples souls. She was a great prayer warrior and prayed for everyone she knew, as well as government officials, politicians, and many countries. Though she is greatly missed, we rejoice that she is with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven where there is no more pain, no more suffering, and no tears! She would want you to know that you must believe on Jesus to see her again. Her last words to the family were, "Live your life for Jesus! Read your Bible and pray every day!" Indeed, what she would want for every person is that each would know the joy and peace and love that come from believing on Jesus.
Judith is survived by Wilma and Andrew Angellford of Sheridan, Oregon; Twiggy Angellford of Sheridan, Oregon; Marcellus and Naomi Angellford and children Boaz and Selah of Lebanon, Oregon; and David and Gwendolyn Stone and children Daniel, Anne Marie, James, and Henry of Nampa, Idaho.
