Golden Gate Bridge Painter, Leland Grantz, age 88, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2014 with his loving wife, Margene, of 58 years at his side in Nampa, Idaho.
Leland was born in Kingsburg, CA to Einar and Ruth Grantz and moved to San Francisco at 6 months of age. He grew up on Henry Street and attended Mission High School and enjoyed playing basketball on the Norsemens team.
In 1943, he was a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and later joined the Merchant Marines. When he returned home, he purchased a 50 Chevy Convertible with his muster pay.
Lelands Swedish parents were members of Mission Dolores Covenant Church on Dolores Street where he grew up with many friends. When he returned from the service there was a thriving singles group where he met Margene Norall, a nurse in training, and knew immediately that she was the love of his life. They married June 30, 1956 in Richvale, CA and later had 2 daughters, Rogene and Rhonda.
He became a painter at a young age in his fathers painting company and painted many SF Victorians and the Palace Hotel. He also had a little car painting business on the side where he got his start with customizing cars.
In 1960, he joined the Golden Gate Bridge Painters Union and was a bridge painter for 15 years. In 1975, he moved the whole family to Nampa, Idaho. He painted a number of bridges in Idaho and Montana and retired in 1988.
His hobbies were tinkering on his 50 Chevy, singing in the church choir, Prison Ministries and Mentoring. He always had a sparkle in his eye and was a friend to everyone. We will dearly miss him.
