Leonard Ercielle Campbell was born on August 29, 1948, to the parents of Lavern Campbell and Violet (Ninas) Campbell in Atkinson, Nebraska. He has one brother named Harold (Rusty) and a sister named Elata. His parents called him Sandy but as an adult he is called Len. He and his family lived on a farm in Nebraska until sometime in the mid to late 1950’s. They then moved to Nampa, Idaho, where Leonard attended grade school, Junior High School and then graduated from Nampa High School in May of 1966.
After high school Len attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1970, specializing in Plant Sciences.
In 1971, Len enlisted into the United States Air Force for four years and served as a Computer Operator at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. He was hoping to fly aircraft, but testing showed that he is color blind. In 1975 Len was honorably discharged from the Air Force and returned to reside with his parents in Nampa, Idaho.
Len met his future bride, Jean Guillemette, in 1978, at a Valentines dance at the Basque Center in Boise, Idaho, put on by St. Alphonsus Hospital, where Jean worked as an RN. Len and Jean were married on April 7, 1979, at St. Marks Catholic Church in Boise. They bought a house in Kuna where they lived and raised their four children.
Len worked as a Computer Analyst for the Idaho State Transportation Department off State Street in Boise until he retired in the spring of 2008.
Len enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping and gardening. Later he started bird watching and taking photographs of some of his favorite bird sightings.
He died peacefully at his Kuna home on April 11, 2026, after suffering from Bladder Cancer.
He is preceded in death by his parents (Lavern and Violet Campbell) and his sister, Elata Hitz. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and his four children, Joseph (Kim) Campbell, Teresa (Adam) Richards, Sarah (Damien) Cerney and Jacob (Ashley) Campbell. Len has 11 grandchildren which he has fully enjoyed.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donating to Friends of MK Nature Center, which is a 501C3 nonprofit organization at friendsofmknc.org.
