Obituary

Martha Horton went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 5. Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, at the Nampa First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. Martha was born February 20, 1922 in Pontiac, Illinois, to Aman Scheeler and Jane Steele Scheeler. She grew up in the nearby small town of Graymont and graduated from Pontiac High School in 1940. She then went to St. Lukes Hospital in Chicago for nurses training. While there she met a young medical student from Nampa, Idaho Tom Horton. They were married September 20, 1944. Tom served in the U.S. Navy at the end of the war and did his residency in Gary, Indiana. They then moved back to Nampa, where he went into medical practice with his father. Aside from a brief return to the Navy in the early 1950's, they lived in Nampa, enjoying life and raising four children. Martha was an active homemaker who, as a member of the First United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school for many years, served as Conference Representative several times, and was active in United Methodist Women. She also served as a Girl Scout leader, and helped with Jobs Daughter Bethel 4 while Jane, Kathy, and Betsy were members.. She was a 50-year member of Chapter AX - P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving as president twice. And she helped in Toms medical practice in lots of different ways over the years. Martha loved the many years she spent at Warm Lake and later at Cascade, and knew all the good huckleberry picking spots. She took up backyard bird feeding/watching later in life and always had her bird books close by. She was a champion card sender, remembering birthdays and anniversaries for family and friends here and around the country. Mom was a voracious reader whose interests ranged from fiction and history to spiritual matters. She had an active, inquisitive mind right up to the end. She showed gracious respect and kindness to all and was much loved by those who knew her, especially her family. Martha was preceded in death by her husband Tom and by her parents. She is survived by her children: Mary Jane (Fred) Burton, Nampa; Kathy Horton, Boise; Betsy (Howard) Gossage, full-time RV-ers currently in Florida; and Charles Horton, Winnipeg, Canada; her grandchildren: Patricia (Greg) Webber, Nampa; John (Karen) Burton, Nampa; Dianna (Rick) Prescott, Port St. Lucie, FL; Jennifer (Jason) Jones, Burley, ID; Lorianne Gossage, Boise; and Brian Gossage, Phoenix, AZ; 14 great grandchildren, and by her siblings: Mary Crane, Springfield, IL; Jim (Nancy) Scheeler, Reston, VA; and Sally Spaulding, Elmira, OR. The family wishes to thank Charlotte Marshall for her loving assistance, which allowed Mom to stay in her home this past year. Memorials may be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 2717 12th Ave. Road, Nampa, ID 83686, or to the charity of your choice.
