Mary O'Malley Obituary Mary O'Malley, 78, of Nampa passed away from a heart attack on November 11, 2024. Mary was born in Nampa, Idaho on October 24, 1946 to Hubert Emil and Helen Alice (Zaehringer) Nettleton.
Mary grew up on the Joyce Livestock Ranch at Sinker Creek and Florence Springs in Owyhee County. She attended grade school at St. Pauls Catholic School and at the Murphy School. Her father was a stockman. Her mother grew up in Philadelphia and moved to Idaho in 1943. The family lived south of Nampa at Deer Flat during the school year.
Mary started high school attending St. Gertrudes Academy in Cottonwood, Idaho for two years. Her junior year was at Nampa High School, and she graduated in the first class from Bishop Kelly in 1965. Her favorite teacher in high school was Sister Catherine. Mary was quite the book worm. When she got bored in school she would open an encyclopedia and started reading. She was a dedicated student, missing the distinction of National Merit Scholar by one point.
Mary started college at the University of Colorado. She then attended Boise College and earned her degree as a registered nurse. She began her career at Mercy Hospital in Nampa. While working Mary earned her degree as a Nurse Practitioner and was part of the first graduating class in this field in Idaho. After earning her degree she began working at Terry Reilly Health Services in Nampa on September 16, 1973. She retired from Terry Reilly Health Services on November 3, 2000.
On May 13, 1967, Mary married Bob OMalley at St Pauls Catholic Church in Nampa, Idaho. Bob and Mary had three children. They moved to Murphy in 1972 where they had a runway and hangar for many aviation pursuits. Many people know that Bob was a pilot. What you may not know is that Mary earned her commercial pilots license and instrument rating.
Bob and Mary rebuilt an original 1800s cabin in Silver City. Being just one hour from Murphy, it was a home base for relaxing, socializing, reading, and hiking for Mary. She spent many hours there, especially in the past twenty years. She enjoyed being an active member of this beautiful community in the mountains and treasured the friendships.
Mary was a long-time member of the Owyhee County Historical Society and volunteered many hours of her time there. She was also a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Oreana, Idaho, St. Pauls Catholic Church in Nampa, and Lady Queen of Tears Catholic Church in Silver City, Idaho.
Mary had a wide range of interests, from travel, geology and history to a love of Mickey Mouse. We will remember her as both frugal and generous, a unique combination. At the time of her death she had two cruises and a trip to Turkey booked!
Survivors include her son Rob (Molly) OMalley, daughter May OMalley (Doug Cutsogeorge), grandsons Warren and Murphy OMalley, Chris Cutsogeorge, granddaughter Sarah Cutsogeorge, son-in-law Gary Long, and her brother Paul (Tracy) Nettleton and his children.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her daughter Maggie (OMalley) Long, and parents Hubert and Helen Nettleton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marys name to Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Oreana, the Owyhee County Historical Society or a charity of your choice.
