Maureen Vredevelt Obituary Maureen J. (McKay) Vredevelt, 96, of Nampa, was born March 25, 1928, in Halfway, OR to Wilfred and Naomi McKay. She was the fifth of eight children. Her father was a Nazarene Minister and the family lived in nine places before she graduated high school in Glasgow MT. She then came to Nampa to attend Northwest Nazarene College and pursued a degree in nursing, graduating in 1951 as a Registered Nurse. She met and married Ercil Bowman Jr. during her time at NNC, supporting him through medical school and Navy career to achieve their dream of him becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon. They had four children David D. Bowman (Gail) of Florida, Kirk R. Bowman (Joyce) of Nampa, ID, Richard L. Bowman (Gretchen) of Moscow, ID and Diane K. Parker (Jim) of Coeur dAlene, ID. The family lived in seven locations across the country before they returned to Nampa in 1968 after retiring from the Navy.
Maureen was always busy helping her children as well as others and kept Gods word at the forefront of family life. She was active in church at every Navy duty station and after returning to Nampa. She was very thrifty and sacrificed to provide for those she cared for, canning from the garden or fruit trees while preparing healthy meals for the family. Maureen and Ercil divorced in 1974 and she started a new chapter in her life. She worked for Mercy Hospital using her nursing talents to serve others.
She met and married David D. Vredevelt in 1979 and they had 37 great years together before he passed away in 2016. They enjoyed camping, hunting, gardening, serving others and reading Gods word. They shared a deep passion for the Lord and rarely missed a chance to worship at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene. She served the church in several ways, but one of her favorites was the Cradle Roll, taking gifts and encouraging new mothers that came to the church nursery. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with extended family members, occupied her daily prayer life.
She was a great lady that served the Lord for 96 years and went home to him on June 4, 2024 . Her ashes will be laid to rest with her husband Dave at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise. She is survived by two brothers, Merritt McKay (Carol) and Neil McKay, both of Nampa, all her children and spouses as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family members. She will be missed but blessed us all.
