Max Howard Fretz, Sr., 82, of Nampa, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the VA Community Living Center in Boise. Max was born December 1, 1934, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and was raised by his parents, Dorothy and Marvin Fretz, in Salem, Virginia. He attended local schools, then joined the U.S. Air Force in January 1954. He served ten years as a jet engine mechanic at various bases overseas and stateside. Max was a born mechanic and fixed cars on the side during his military service. He and his first wife, Ellen, had two sons, Howard and Allen.
After leaving the military Max moved to Nampa where he operated several different service stations, eventually establishing his own repair shop, Maxs Auto Clinic, on Second Street South. He was active in the local JayCees and was a private pilot, flying many search missions with the Civil Air Patrol. Max married Linda Zornik in 1997. At age 70 Max sold his repair shop and started fixing computers out of his home. He and Linda had 20 years together, enjoying the cabin in High Valley, fishing, and trips to visit friends and family.
Max will be greatly missed by his wife, Linda, and sons, Howard and Allen, of Nampa; his sister, Dorothy Leonard, of Roanoke, Virginia; his flying buddy, Larry H.; his longtime good friend, Frank Y.; and the loving church family of First United Presbyterian Church, Nampa.
The family is very grateful to the VA Medical Center in Boise for years of wonderful health care and special hospice nurturing.
A memorial service with military honors to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Nampa First United Presbyterian Church, 400 Lake Lowell Ave., Nampa. Burial will be at a later date in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise.
