Obituary

Born on May 10, 1950, Michael Gordon Wiebe entered the world in Hastings, Nebraska, as the son of Gordon and Nadeene Wiebe. At a young age, Mike showed an interest in music. By the time he reached high school in Puyallup, Washington, Mike was involved in music at his church. He graduated valedictorian of his class in 1968. While attending Northwest Nazarene University, he met Julie Bruening. Michael and Julie were married on March 20, 1971.

They raised two beautiful daughters, Paula and Trisha. During the early years of their lives together, Michael and Julie served at Nazarene churches in Vancouver and Puyallup, Washington, and Beaverton, Oregon. For the last 23 years Michael led worship at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene. His influence on that congregation was profound, because his music reached into the same part of the soul that God inhabits. His passions included leading worship, writing and arranging music, fishing in Alaska, and spending time with family.

Michael earned a bachelors degree from Northwest Nazarene University in social science education, a bachelors degree from Pacific Lutheran University in music, a masters degree from Boise State University in music, and a doctoral degree from the Robert Webber Institute for Worship Studies. He was an ordained deacon in the Church of the Nazarene. Michael passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. He leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Julie, daughters Paula Wiebe and Trisha (Joseph) Lanham, two prized grandchildren, Mikayla and Kaden Lanham, parents, Gordon and Nadeene Wiebe, brother, Steven (Bonnie) Wiebe, sisters Sharon (Bruce) Wasson, and Karen Ayris.

He was preceded in death by their infant son, Aaron Michael. Mikes family would like to thank the many friends and family members around the world who have prayed for him during the last two years. The family is also appreciative of the care given to Michael by the doctors and nurses of the Saint Alphonsus Medical Group. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given in Michaels memory and honor to Northwest Nazarene University for a Michael G. Wiebe Music and Worship Scholarship.
