R. Wayne McConnell, 83, passed away peacefully at home on December 5, 2025, surrounded by family.
Wayne was born February 24, 1942, in Nyssa, Oregon, to Hugh and Ruth McConnell. He grew up in Willow Creek and later Salem, graduating from North Salem High School in 1960. He attended Oregon College of Education before transferring to the University of Oregon, where he earned a degree in history in 1965.
Wayne was commissioned in the U.S. Navy through Officer Candidate School and later served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the USS Vernon County, including service during the Vietnam War. He continued his military career in the Navy Reserves for 26 years, retiring as a Captain in 1996.
After active duty, Wayne began a long career in real estate in Ontario, Oregon. He welcomed his son, John Alexander, in 1976 and remained a devoted father. He was active in the Ontario Optimist Club, the Ontario Elks, and the Acacia Masonic Lodge.
In 1990, Wayne married Darlene, with whom he shared 35 years of partnership. An avid outdoorsman, he especially loved hunting with Alex and his well-trained dogs, including his inseparable companions, Von, Sara, Mac, Sage, and Molly.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Darlene; his son Alex (Dana); granddaughter Gatsby; brother John (Lynn); brother-in-law Bill Miller; and several nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Beverly.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Rhonda Erstrom, Carli Ohlensehlen, Nancy Anthony, Curt Gaschler, Jo and Doyal Snyder, and Bernie Babcock for their support.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be held at 2 pm Monday, December 15, 2025, at the Four Rivers Cultural Center in Ontario, Oregon. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vale High School FFA Chapter.
