Randy Johnson was born in Gooding, Idaho on March 27, 1926 to Edna E. (Yates) Johnson and Milton Winslow Johnson. He worked on his grandparents farm from a young age and also sold The Saturday Evening Post on street corners to augment the familys income. During these years he attended a one room school that was quite a distance from their home, often going by wagon or on horseback. When Randy was 13 the family relocated to Portland, Oregon where his father worked in the Kaiser Shipyards. He attended Jefferson High School and the Mallory Christian Church where Randy met Betty in Sunday School. He attended two terms at Oregon State University (OSU), and then joined the Navy two days before his 18th Birthday. Before leaving for WWII he told 15 year-old Betty And while Im gonegrow up! During his service as a Motor Machinist Mate 2nd class on a Landing Ship Tank (LST) #841 he traveled throughout the Pacific Theater to the Philippines, Japan, Korea, and China. Upon his return to Portland as a civilian, he was enthusiastically greeted by Betty where upon he said Where did you learn to kiss like that? Randy returned to OSU where he belonged to Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, making friends whom he enjoyed for more than 60 years. Randy and Betty were married on August 29, 1948 and settled in Corvallis where Randy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Food Technology. He accepted a position with Libby McNeill and Libby and worked for Libbys for 23 years. During the Libby years the Johnson family moved 20 times making dear, life-long friends in Portland, Yakima (3x), Cuba, Chicago (2x), Puerto Rico and several places in California. While in Cuba in the 1950s Randy joined Rotary International and continued his Rotary membership everywhere he lived. Randy resigned from Libbys in 1973 after traveling the world as VP with the International Division to purchase honey bees and establish Honeygold Corporation in Nampa Idaho. At Honeygold Randy worked for almost 40 years with a group of fine men who became friends as well. He and Betty established deep roots in Nampa, where he was President of Rotary, loved to ski at Bogus Basin, go deer hunting on horseback, and attending the Jazz Festival annually. Randy and Betty were married for 66 wonderful, adventurous years. Randy will be sorely missed for his engaging smile, his hearty hugs, his love of jokes, and his constant interest in people and what they were doing. On Monday, Feb 2 Randy passed away peacefully while sitting in his recliner taking a nap with Betty sitting next to him. Randy is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter Marlene Mason and son-in-law Tim, and sons Brian and Leland; grandchildren Nels and Laura Mason, Kristina Mason and Tony Badger; and great-grandchildren Anne, Rachel, Vincent and Oliver Mason, and Jean and Kim Whipple and grandchildren Rand, Nels and Marita. Randy and Betty also have numerous adopted children including Tony and Linda Young and their children Terah, Tyler, Tenielle, Troy, Tristen, Tony Thomas and Tanner from Nampa. Randy is also survived by his sisters, Laura Anson of Portland and Maxine Adler of Victorville, CA and numerous Johnson and Hillyard nieces and nephews. There will be two services, one in Nampa on Monday, February 9 at 2pm at the new St. Pauls Catholic Church 501 W. Roosevelt, Nampa followed by a dinner gathering at 4:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 927 Ruth Lane, Nampa, and a celebration of life and inurnment in the Seattle area at a later date.
