Tom Harvey our Dad, a man of strong faith, integrity, quiet strength and incredible humor, passed away of natural causes at his home on April 1, 2015. Tom was born May 14, 1926 to June and George Harvey in Nampa, Idaho. Tom had 3 brothers Ray, Alan and Dan and one sister Nancy. Right after graduating from Nampa High School in 1944, Tom drove with a bunch of friends in a pick up over to Boise and enlisted in the US Navy. He was trained and then served as a radio operator in the Philippines during WWII receiving 3 medals for his honorable service. When he got home he took that knowledge and acquired a ham radio license and conversed with people all over the world throughout the rest of his life call sign W7MKD. After the war Tom returned to Nampa and worked for the PFE shops at the Union Pacific in Nampa. In 1950 he married his first wife Ruth Duffin. They had two beautiful daughters Karen and Rhonda. Shortly thereafter, Tom and a friend took advantage of the G.I. bill and in 1953 he got his associates degree at Oregon Tech as a Lab Technician. He worked for several hospitals around the treasure valley and was known for his ability to draw blood without hurting his patient and so was always called upon to draw the blood of babies when the need arose. Tom and Ruth ended their marriage in 1955. In 1965 Tom married MaryAnn Schwalbe the widow of a longtime friend and with her came three children Sue 12, Janet 10 and Dan 7. He was our rock and became our Dad and helped mom stabilize our family. In 1967 our family expanded to include our brother Rex. Dad had wondered whether when they had a shared child he would feel partial but he said when Rex came there was no difference he loved us all the same. Of that we were certain. In 1969 Dad went back to college to get his bachelors degree at Boise State. He worked very hard studying late into the evenings while working full time to support our family. Dads mantra was that school came first and everything else came second. Mom loved to camp and fish so we made trips to our favorite spots around Idaho. Dad didnt really like to camp but he sacrificed many sacred golf Saturdays to make sure we were setup. Dads passion was golf and he had a reputation as one of Broadmore Country Club best golfers. He played to a 7 handicap and was always in the 1st flight in the annual Memorial Day golf tournament. He spent his retirement years with his buddies playing golf spring, summer and fall and Gin Rummy in the winter. He was as hard to beat at Gin as Golf! Dad was a true family man and greatly enjoyed all family gatherings on holidays and birthdays. A man rich in love, his children, grand-children and great-grand children were all an important part in his life. Tom had a long and fulfilling life, always surrounded by family and friends. He missed MaryAnn dearly during the last 2.5 years and now happily joins her. Vigil services will be held at 7:00 PM Monday, April 6, 2015 at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the St. Pauls Catholic Church, Nampa.
