Dale H. Tiegs

Dale H. Tiegs peacefully passed away December 28, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. Dale was born May 2, 1936 in Nampa, Idaho, to Herbert and Opal Tiegs, the youngest of four children. He grew up on the family farm and attended Lone Tree School and Nampa High School where he met his future wife Alta Malone, and they married shortly after their graduation in 1954. Dale kept up with the family tradition of farming and began clearing and farming the Dry Lake area south of Nampa. Together they had six children and the family enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and competitive late-night board and card games. Dale was a prankster and especially loved playing jokes on his kids. He was musically gifted and learned to play the piano by ear while his Bing Crosby-like singing voice and whistling were truly extraordinary. Dale loved his role as a father and was a Melba Booster and PTA member, actively involved and perpetually late to his children’s school and sporting events, jotting down stats of every game in his ever-present pocket notepad. Dale and Alta’s marriage lasted 18 years. In 1973, Dale met Margie Hash and they quickly realized each had met their match and married that same year. Snowmobiling became a family favorite, spending weekends blazing trails in the beautiful Idaho backcountry. In 1980, Dale sold the farm and he and Margie loaded up the RV with the intent of traveling around the U.S., but after their first stop in Garibaldi, Oregon, Dale’s fishing passion consumed him and it wasn’t long before he bought a fishing boat and began commercial salmon fishing which he enjoyed catching, not eating. Meanwhile, Dale purchased his first computer in 1982, and being a brilliant and technically savvy man, (he actually read those perplexing instruction manuals!) began teaching himself how to computer program in pursuit of a new career but his hopes were dashed when he contracted a bad “fever” and became a highly skilled Pac-Man aficionado instead. Dale fished along the Oregon and Washington coasts for many years, spending two summers commercial fishing in SE Alaska while Margie managed their restaurant business. He served as a volunteer fireman and was also an active member of their Christian church.

Dale’s love of family was boundless, and he was determined to attend every wedding, graduation and family reunion no matter the distance, and he took great interest in each family member’s life, remembering even the smallest details. Dale was a deep and abstract thinker, well-versed in many topics and spent countless hours engaged in lively conversation. After Dale and Margie retired, they moved back to Nampa and in 2013, Dale sadly lost the love of his life and bantering partner, Margie.

Dale is fondly remembered for his love of pancakes, beef enchiladas and college football, his dry sense of humor, witty intellect, exceptional memory and his obsessive (and oftentimes annoying) attention to detail. His sharp mind and humor remained until his last breath. He was a loving, affectionate and devoted family man and he emphasized the importance of family while thoughtfully and lovingly nurturing these meaningful relationships. Dale was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Dale was preceded in death by his loving wife Margie and beloved son Gregg Tiegs, his parents, two brothers, a sister, and several grandchildren. He is survived by his children: Cheryl Callaway, Nampa, Gregg’s wife Vikki Tiegs, Kennewick, Washington, Frank Tiegs (Janet) Pasco, Washington, Allison Tiegs, Nampa, Lori Fox (Randy), Nampa, Stacey Devereaux (Ray), Boise, Michael Young (Julie), Kiowa, Colorado, Penny Guevarra (German), Corvallis, Oregon, Mark Hash (Linda), Sequim, Washington, 32 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

A viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel. Funerl services will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church, 911 S. Cole Rd., Boise, Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. but please don’t tell Dale, he’s been told to arrive at 10:00. Interment following at Cloverdale Memorial Park. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Please join us for a special celebratory luncheon served immediately following the services.
