May 24, 1920 ~ August 17, 2016 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Dr. Paul Mangum, Sr., went to Heaven on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in his sleep at a local rest home in Nampa.  A Memorial Service to honor him and celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016 at College Church of the Nazarene, 504 E. Dewey Ave. in Nampa.  Services are under the direction of the Nampa Funeral Home, Yraguen Chapel, 415 12th Ave. So. in Nampa, 442-8171.  An online guest book is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com.

Paul was born on May 24, 1920 to Dr. Thomas E. and Emily Rachel Mangum at 903 Holly St. in Nampa, Idaho. He received his education at Nazarene Grammar School, Roosevelt, NNC Academy, and Nampa High.  He graduated from NNC in 1942 and finished classes for his Masters Degree at Pasadena College in August of 1943.

He married Geraldine (Jerri) Edna Webb, his bride of over 51 years, in August of 1942.  She mothered their 3 children:  Paul Daniel, Jr., Anne Louise, and Peter Gordon.  Jerri faithfully served with him in his calling to pastoral ministry.

Paul began his ministry in the church of the Nazarene in September of 1943 at Arlington Oregon.  He went on the pastor Nazarene churches in Lewiston, ID; Tillamook, OR; Corpus Christi, TX; Eureka, CA; Bakersfield, CA; and Oakland, CA.  He was appointed District Superintendent of the Philadelphia  District in 1971 where he served for 14 years.  It was during this time that he received an honorary doctorate for his exemplary service and leadership.  Upon "retirement" Dr. Mangum moved back to Nampa, ID, where he was invited to join the staff of College Church of the Nazarene and served for over 6 years.  Later he was invited to finish out his ministry as an Adjunct Chaplain for Mercy Hospital.

While Paul was on staff at College Church, Jerri was diagnosed with the cancer that took her life.  After Jerri went to Heaven, Paul married Laura Sporleder.  They enjoyed many good years volunteering for NNU and College Church.  They traveled in the USA and Europe, visiting family and friends.  They were married for almost 20 years before Laura went to Heaven.

Paul was also preceded in death by his father Dr. T. E. Mangum, Sr., his mother Emily Mangum, and his stepmother Frances Mangum; his brothers:  Dr. T. E. Mangum, Jr. and Dr. Robert Mangum; his sisters Joan Chapman, Emily Desper, and Ruth Cahill; and his son Peter Gordon Mangum.

Paul is survived by his son Paul D. Mangum, Jr. and daughter Anne L. DeCloss and her husband Bob DeCloss; his grandchildren: Paul D. Mangum, III, Matthew Mangum, Amanda (Mangum) Greig and her husband Michael Greig, Daniel Mangum,  Josh Mangum, Debra (DeCloss) Ellis and her husband Allen Ellis, and Daniel Paul DeCloss and his wife Lindsey (Turchie) DeCloss;  and 5 great grandchildren Bobby, Elizabeth, and Emily Ellis and Lucas and Landon DeCloss.  He also is survived by 2 stepdaughters and their husbands,  Suzanne and Leroy Horne, and Joan and Dave Lancaster; stepson Brian Sporleder and his wife Leslie and stepson Lindsay Sporleder; 3 stepgrandchildren and 4 stepgreatgrandchildren.

Paul received many honors and awards over the years.  Most recently he became a part of the "Legends of NNU."  But an award he treasured greatly was a knit framed message from the Laymen's Retreat on the Philadelphia District letting him know the concept they think of when they remember him.  It simply reads "COMPASSION." The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Mangum Family Nursing Scholarship, 623 So. University Blvd., Nampa, ID 83686.
