Evelyn Gustafson Obituary

In the early hours of Thursday, February 15th, Evelyn Louise Gustafson went home to be with the Lord. She lived a long and full life, finally going home at 103 years old. It was a gift to have Grandma Ev in our lives for so many years! It’s not very often people get to say they have a great-great-grandma still around. She will be greatly missed!

Evelyn was born in Mount Morris, Illinois on June 1, 1920 to Orville and Julia Rock. She had one younger brother Everette, that everyone called Rocky. She spent about 39 years living in Illinois where many of her life’s greatest moments happened! She graduated from Belvidere High School in 1938. She met the love of her life Charles “Chuck” at a barn dance right after high school. Chuck and Evelyn got married in August of 1939. They grew their family by 2 daughters, Nancy joining in 1940 and then Peggy in 1942. Not long after Peggy was born, Chuck left for WW II and Evelyn held down the fort. Working at a plant that was short on workers due to the war, she did what she needed to to help support her family.

Evelyn and Chuck moved to California in 1959 following Evelyn’s parents and brother. Evelyn retired as a book keeper in 1985. After retirement her and Chuck spent time traveling to Europe and Asia on multiple occasions. She loved seeing the world! They also loved spending their nights and weekends at the bowling alley. They were part of a bowling league, winning many trophies over the years. Evelyn also had a love for dancing! She met Chuck at a dance which seems fitting that as their legacy grew, Evelyn could always be found on the dance floor of her great grandchildren’s weddings!

Evelyn was widowed in 1997, after being married to Charles for 58 wonderful years. Her heart belonged to Chuck, so Evelyn never did marry again. She moved back to Illinois to live with family for a couple of years and then went back to California to live with her daughter Peggy. Then, in 2001, Evelyn decided to follow her daughter Nancy and Son in law Jim to Idaho! She lived with Nancy and Jim for 6 months and then moved into a senior living apartment. Evelyn was very independent and loved to live by herself! She loved reading, watching old movies, completing Sudoku and crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, and playing cards. She would even play two hands of rummy by herself as if she was the opponent! She enjoyed all of those things up until her eyes just wouldn’t allow.

In 2013 Evelyn’s daughter Peggy moved to Idaho and Evelyn moved in with her. She would live with Peggy for the next 10 years until her needs demanded more care. Peggy loved and served her mother well until she was not physically able to do so any more. In 2023 Evelyn’s family moved her into Park Place Assisted Living which is where she was living when the Lord invited her home!

Great-Great-Grandma Ev, we are forever grateful to be a part of your longevity and legacy. It was a blessing to get to have you in our lives for so many years! Thank you for the stories, the dances, the card games, the laughs, and most of all your love!

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Peggy Rowell, of Nampa, Idaho; her grandson Gary (and Evelyn) Swanson, of Tehachapi, California; her granddaughter, Tia Crank, of Merced, California; her grandson, Mark Swanson, of Riverside, California; her granddaughter Dianne (and Calvin) Owens, of Melba, Idaho. She is also survived by 12 Great-Grandchildren; 21 Great-Great-Grandchildren; and a Great-Great-Great Grandchild coming in May!

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Gustafson; daughter Nancy Saunders; son-in-law Wynn Rowell; and son-in-law James Saunders.

We want to thank the staff and care givers at Park Place Assisted Living in Nampa, Idaho. We are so grateful for your love and care for Evelyn. It was a blessing to our family to know that Evelyn was being cared for by people that truly loved her and cared about her well-being. We love you all very much! We also want to thank Journey’s Hospice and her nurse Robin for the end of life love and care you gave Evelyn. We appreciate it more than you know!
