Evelyn Helen Roth, 100, of Ridgefield, Washington, passed away December 2020, peacefully. She lived the last 22 months in Nampa, Idaho close to her daughter. Evelyn was born in New Rockford, North Dakota in September 1920 to Joe and Bertha. She was the second born of five children. Her oldest sister, Violet , passed away at 8 years of age of diphtheria. Evelyn’s dad had a threshing business and when people couldn’t pay for work done, and Violet passing away, it was time to leave. Joe’s sister invited them to move to Washington. In 1927, Joe and Bertha packed up their family in their Model T Ford and traveled to Enterprise, Washington just outside the Ridgefield area.
Evelyn’s dad, Joe, took on any work that could be found and the family lived on a farm raising most of their own food. Evelyn, now the oldest, was Dad’s “right hand man”. She milked the cows, fed the animals, and helped in the garden. It was a hard life but there was always time to play.
Evelyn spoke only German in their home. She went to first grade in North Dakota living in a German settlement. Now that she was in Washington she repeated first grade to help her learn English. She went to a one room schoolhouse for her elementary grades and Ridgefield High School is where she met her future husband, Sid Roth.
Evelyn attended Cascade College in Portland her first year of college. She stayed out a year to save money for NNC. The next year she went to Northwest Nazarene College majoring in Religion and graduated in 1944. When school was finished, she worked on planning her wedding. Sid and Evelyn were married on March 1, 1945. They had 68 years together full of children, laughter, and lots of memories. Long Beach, Washington trip every year, fishing off the jetty, visiting National Parks, tent camping are just a few of the vacations taken with the family. They had 8 children, Dave (Hulda) Roth, Larry (Sherry) Roth, Tim (Kathy) Roth, Carol (Dave) Long, Dan (Donna) Roth, Doug (Dorothy) Roth, Jodi (Craig) Laughlin. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, sister Phyllis, brother Alvin, her husband Sid, her son Robert, and great grandson Garrett.
Evelyn was a homemaker and active in the Ridgefield Nazarene Church in missions, choir, and Sunday School. She loved her husband, children, 36 grandchildren, and 54 great grandchildren. Mom loved gardening, cooking and her pictures of her family. Most of all she loved Jesus. With Dad, Mom would read the Bible and pray each morning for their family. Our family is so thankful for these prayers of our parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made to Nazarene World Missions or Gideon’s International. Tributes can be sent to www.nampafuneralhome.com.
