Richard P. “Dick” Newman, 84, passed away on April 15, 2023, at the home of his daughter, in Nampa, Idaho.
He was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon on September 13, 1938, to the late Miles and Madeline Hovey Newman. Most of his childhood was spent in Bend, Oregon. Dick served in the Army National Guard out of High School. Dick attended the Forest Tech School at COCC in the fall of 1962, and in 1964 he started work at the Oregon State University Forest Research Lab in Corvallis, where he worked for 5 years. He returned to Bend and started work in the Spring of 1969 at the Pacific Northwest Silviculture Lab, where he worked until they closed in 1995.
Dick was an avid outdoorsman and a true Oregonian, he loved hunting, fishing, gardening, searching for arrow heads and spending time on his “ranch” in Sumpter - or just anywhere in the wonderful forests of Oregon. Dick was a family man and loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and his great grandchildren. He enjoyed taking his dog, Hopper, out for walks in the woods, feeding him treats, and playing ball with him. Dick also enjoyed collecting old coins and stamps as a hobby. His favorite holiday was Christmas, he enjoyed hunting up the best Christmas Tree out in the woods with his family, as well as decorating the tree and wrapping presents for his grandchildren. Dick was a friend to all and enjoyed the time he spent with everyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Newman, and his sister Barbara Hiller.
He is survived by his four children, Christine (Loren) Wilson of Nampa, Idaho; Rhonda Carpenter of Meridian, Idaho; Regan (Richard) Hensley, and Cody Newman both of Bend, Oregon; and a step-daughter, Cammie Wilson of Bend, Oregon. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held for family and friends at the Elks Lodge in Bend on Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., to be followed by graveside funeral services at the Pilot Butte Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that you join them in a reception/celebration of life following the graveside services at the Elk’s Lodge in Bend at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements under the Nampa Funeral Home Yraguen Chapel where an online guest book and full obituary is available at www.nampafuneralhome.com
