Simon Landa passed away on February 22nd, 2024, doing what he loved—farming. He was born June 1st, 1939, in Boise, Idaho to Sabino and Sabina Landa. Raised on the farm with his brother Joseph and sister Josephine, Simon spent his entire 84 years of life farming in the Sunnyslope area of Caldwell.
Simon attended grades 1-8 at Sunnyslope school. He attended and graduated from Marsing high school in 1957. This was the start of making lifelong friends in the community he grew up in. Everybody knew Simon.
After graduation Simon served eight years in the Army National Guard before being honorably discharged in September of 1964.
On July 10, 1970 he married Patricia (Pat) Baalson at Saint Hubert’s Catholic Church in Homedale, Idaho. Simon was the proud father of two daughters Gina and Michelle.
Simon developed a passion for the game of golf and in 1978 he and Pat purchase property at Terrace Lakes resort in Garden Valley. Over the next 45 years, so many memories were made on the golf course and in the cantina with family and friends.
Simon was a diehard fan to his favorite sports teams— the New York Yankees, Notre Dame, Oakland Raiders, and Boise State. He and Pat were BSU season-ticket holders for many years and loved to travel to away games. Go, Broncos!
Simon was a commissioner for 35 years serving on the Marsing Ambulance Board. He was also a 50+ year member of the Caldwell Elks. His community was very important to him.
Simon was very proud of his Basque heritage. Simon and his parents were charter members of Euzkaldunak Basque club in Boise, Idaho. They enjoyed many dinners at the Basque Center, helping to keep the Basque culture alive and thriving. He was a member of Caldwell Basque Charities serving as co-chairman numerous times. He loved helping his community through the charitable work this organization does. And he particularly loved watching his daughters and later his granddaughters perform traditional Basque dances. He also was a member of the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, Mountain Home Basque club, Gooding Basque club, Ontario, Oregon Basque club and Txoko Ona Basque Club of Homedale, Idaho. He developed a love for the Basque card game Muz in his retirement years. Every Tuesday evening and on many Sundays, you could find Simon playing the game that he loved surrounded by old and new friends. Gora Euzkadi!!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sabino and Sabina Landa, his brother, Joseph, and sister, Josephine. He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years Pat, his daughters Gina Landa and Michelle Andrews, son in law Dan Andrews, and his four grandchildren Kamryn Phay, Campbell Andrews, Carson Andrews and Teagan Phay. He loved being an Aitita and joking around with all four of his grandchildren.
