Dear Randall, Karen, & Tim,

I'm sorry to hear that you've lost your father. Although I was young when I knew "Uncle Paul", my memories of him and your whole family are fond. Mom, being the nurse that she was, always spoke highly of "Dr. Sutherland"...I'm sure with stories about how he care for our family in ways of which I don't remember the particulars. But, it's more than medical care that I remember...something about a kind spirit that I perceived. I fondly remember our school days together, Tim & Randall. Karen, I guess you were enough older that I don't remember going to school with you but still thought highly of you as a "big kid" and certainly think highly of you as an adult both when I saw you in person & through the missy kid grapevine.

Please know my thoughts are with you.

Paul was my intercollegiate debate partner. We were prepared to debate either side of the controversy between Communism and Nationalism in China. We both became Nazarene missionaries.

I was saddened to hear of Paul Sutherlands passing.
Some of my fondest childhood memories take me back to the Nazarene mission compound in Taming China in 1936 to 1941.
It was during the my five to eight years of age period when I had the privilege of staying with the Sutherland family while attending school.
I was the youngest of the boys in their family and we all slept in a large bedroom together. Being the youngest I was often the brunt of many jokes and teasing.
Once, while there was a lot of gunfire noise due to the constant war between the Chinese Nationalist and Japanese armies, I was very scared and much to the glee of the older boys including Paul my fright was increased when Paul said that there were bandits under my bed. However, I was so relieved when they told me they were just kidding about the bandits. I always knew that they must have been afraid as well.
Once a year when the weather was hot our families would spend some time in Peitaho on the coast during the extremely hot weather. I remember one time when Paul and I were skinny dipping in a tidal pool down at the beach when a lady came down and sat just a few feet away from us and started reading a book. Paul and I spent quite a long time sitting in the pool, afraid to go over to where we had stashed our clothes. By the time the lady left we were feeling very water logged.
I remember Paul and I trying to sing a duet at the annual Christmas service and barely getting through it because of laughing.
I have always felt honored for those happy days I spent with the Sutherlands.

Leonie,

My prayers are with you and your family during this time. Reading Paul's obituary left me in awe! He was an amazing man and really seemed to live life to its fullest. I know I only met him a couple of times but I was instantly drawn to him- he was always smiling and truly seemed interested in our conversations. Now he is able to run again with our Lord. I pray for blessings and peace for you and your family.

Paul and I were friends during NNC study years.
I had the privilege of knowing and traveling with Paul's parents, Prof. and Mrs. Francis Sutherland.
